"In the event of a road accident, it is vital that medical assistance arrives as early as possible at the accident scene, and it is also important that this assistance provides an adequate and effective response to the range of situations that may require its presence. The service proposed here, called eCall, is a system whose installation is to be made mandatory in all vehicles. In the event of an accident, it triggers an automatic call to the nearest emergency point, with information about the time and exact location of the accident, and the direction in which the vehicle was travelling. During this call, the emergency service operator will be able to speak and hear what is happening inside the vehicle. This technology enables access to a range of geographical data about location and direction, which are collated and monitored in real time via satellite. Notwithstanding other details about possible limitations of the system, this last aspect of access to data requires that we ensure a high level of protection for personal data and an assurance that all aspects of individual freedoms will be safeguarded. Unfortunately, the report does not provide an adequate response to those requirements."@en1
