"Water is a public good, and we need to protect it and ensure that it is used properly. More than 800 million people still do not have access to drinking water, and the United Nations’ objectives in terms of basic sanitation remain a long way from being achieved. This report therefore examines and identifies the challenges and obstacles relating to the proper implementation of the Water Framework Directive of 2000 in the Member States, in particular, with regard to the ecological, chemical and quantitative ‘good status’ to be reached by European water bodies by 2015. I am voting for this report, which sets out several ideas to be included in the ‘Blueprint to safeguard Europe’s water resources’, to be published this year. I would like to highlight some key ideas. The effective participation of the regions is important in defining policies, as there is no one single policy. The issue of water should be ‘mainstreamed’ into all EU policies, with a holistic approach to all water resources. There should be an EU policy on water reuse and recycling. Research and innovation should be further promoted, in particular, in regions that are subject to water shortages. Finally, there should be international cooperation on ensuring the sustainable development of water resources."@en1
