"I am voting for this report because water is a public good that should be protected by governments. Water is also a public good that is useful for productive sectors such as fisheries and agriculture, and should be offered to consumers at a fair price. The effective implementation of the Water Framework Directive should therefore be firm and uniform for all EU Member States. In my country, Galicia, there are a high number of cases of failure to implement the rules on water, such as the dam on the River Umia, the Conchas Dam and other failures in the purification of our rivers. It is also very important to point out that management of water policy needs to be undertaken at government and decision-making level, involving the respective territories and their peoples. It should therefore support direct management, as in the case of the Hydrographic Confederation of Minho-Sil (CHMS). Water management must be undertaken by governments, but it must be brought closer to the public, with the aim of addressing the needs of the people through its management, thereby protecting them from more powerful private interests."@en1
