"Water is undoubtedly the most important of all public goods. The adoption of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in 2000 means the EU has a solid framework for sustainable and efficient management of water resources. However, the pace at which the WFD has been implemented in EU Member States and regions has been very slow. In November 2012, the Commission will table a plan to preserve Europe’s water resources, with the aim of addressing current and future challenges to water resources. This report, which is Parliament’s contribution to the Commission’s plan, advocates strengthening the regional and local dimension, and involving local communities and stakeholders, participating actively at all stages in the process of setting out and implementing policy. It also advocates a holistic approach to protecting water resources, in particular, drinking water. As such, the water issue should be integrated into all policy areas at EU, national and regional level. I voted for this report for those reasons."@en1
