"In principle, the creation of macro-regions based on common geographic features, such as maritime areas, mountain ranges or river basins, can bring about synergies and valuable improvements in cooperation between neighbouring countries across national borders. Nevertheless, I do not believe it is necessary to establish a separate, institutionalised macro-regional strategy. We must oppose new bureaucratic structures, not least because they involve additional costs and administration. Instead, we should continue to allow macro-regions to form where this seems sensible and, in particular, we should enable the Member States to take the initiative themselves. For this reason, I have voted against this report."@en1
