"The adoption of macro-regional strategies creates many opportunities. They promote faster territorial-based development, increase social and economic cohesion, concentrate on the challenges and problems of the region concerned and emphasise the role of links between urban and rural areas.
They are also an innovative form of inter-regional and supranational European cooperation, and they contribute to greater cohesion and better coordination of policy in a variety of sectors, as well as supporting job creation and ensuring sustainable growth. Finally, macro-regional strategies enable the establishment of fruitful and constructive relations in EU Neighbourhood Policy, the exchange of good practices and progress built on territorial-based development.
I am a very strong supporter of creating new macro-regional strategies, and I hope that new macro-regions will be established in the near future, including a Carpathian macro-region. For these reasons, I voted in favour of the Alfonsi report."@en1
