"I wish to thank my colleagues from the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection and the Committee on Transport and Tourism for initiating the draft report on the regulatory introduction of the in-vehicle emergency call system ‘eCall’. Thanks to the eCall system, emergency teams will be able to reach the scene of the incident as quickly as possible and provide first aid to the casualties. This, in turn, will increase the chance of survival and reduce the number of victims and of people seriously injured in road accidents. This system would be extremely beneficial to travellers. According to forecasts, the technology would help save up to 2 500 lives every year. The cost of installing the required equipment is reckoned to be completely minimal. This technology must be introduced from the perspective of citizens’ security and safety. This is why I welcome the resolution and am pleased with the backing given to it by the majority of my colleagues. I also hope that the Commission and Member States will take the appropriate measures to introduce the eCall system everywhere within the specified timescales, so that we can guarantee better health and safety for European citizens."@en1
