"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, when drafting this report, absolutely no consideration was given to the directly affected parties: road haulage companies. In Italy, 91% of freight transport takes place by road. Their rights will be ignored if this report is adopted in its current form.
In many of Parliament’s committees, we strive every day to reduce the financial and administrative burden on European companies, but reports such as this one undermine all of our efforts, since they will suffocate the companies with further bureaucratic burdens, and lead to countless financial losses and new forms of unfair competition.
It would not have taken much to obtain a balanced report that did not forget our companies’ right to survive in very hard financial times, but this kind of dialogue was not possible. On the contrary, the report even purposely ignored previous EU legislative acts, such as the 2002 Working Time Directive. It even ignored Commission documents that acknowledged the danger of practices such as retrofitting, which is, however, proposed in this report. The document that we shall be voting on tomorrow will ask us to forget the positive achievements made in recent years and once again, it will be European companies that pay the price."@en1
