We cannot remain indifferent to widespread violations of human rights and the deepening humanitarian and political crisis in Sahel countries. We need only cite the example of Mauritania, where slavery has been abolished three times already, and yet it is still a commonly encountered phenomenon. It is also alarming that the Moroccan authorities have for 30 years denied non-governmental organisations monitoring human rights entry into the territory of the Western Sahara, and made it difficult for residents to access water, education and basic information. Despite the presence of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, this mission is not competent to decide on issues regarding respect for human rights, which, in my opinion, is unacceptable For many months, we have also witnessed atrocities and a deteriorating situation for the inhabitants of the Sahel band, which causes continuous waves of migration, for example. This is due to the lack of political response to the activities of armed rebel gangs, mercenaries, ex-Gaddafi forces and al Qaeda terrorists in northern Mali, Niger and Chad. As Europeans, we should respond loudly and resolutely to these events. In the name of freedom and respect for human rights, we must unanimously condemn the escalation of violence. Europe must speak with one voice and clearly state its opposition to the events in Sahel."@en1
