"Mr President, the EU’s current strategy with regard to the Sahel does not sufficiently highlight the connection between development and security. In my view, we should, for example, consider a civilian mission to Mali.
It is especially important that we build countries’ own capacity in the Sahel region and support the regional organisations that are active in the Sahel. As the problems are regional in nature, the strategies too should be implemented at regional level.
I was particularly pleased that Blaise Compaoré has now been selected as peace mediator in the crisis, representing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and I hope that the situation in the country will soon get back on track. Obviously, the Commission needs to continue with its excellent work and focus in particular on the food crisis, natural disasters, chronic poverty and the situation regarding refugees. It is good that the Commission has increased humanitarian assistance appropriations. The EU must particularly consider the situation of young people, who are some of the most likely victims of recruitment by terrorist and criminal networks. Women must be given the opportunity to be included, and provided with education and work, and the link between education, development and security is especially relevant here."@en1
