"Mr President, the situation in the Sahel continues to be extremely grave. Humanitarian aid for 18 million people suffering from hunger is made difficult by the activities of terrorist groups, traffickers in women and the political situation with the Tuareg in Mali. This year’s three-fold increase in financial support from the EU was necessary, but I fear it is not enough. We must also help with educating people, so that they can focus on legal activities that strengthen economic stability and the necessary independence of the population of this region, and so that they have a chance to resist illegal activities. There is good news from the activities of regional organisations such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Joint Staff Operations Committee (CEMOC), and it is therefore important for the European institutions and UN to help them and provide financial and organisational assistance both in their fight against terrorism, crime and drug trafficking, and in coping with drought, famine and poverty. I applaud the fact that UNICEF has this year saved 4 million children who would have died from hunger and infections, but infections are unfortunately continuing to spread despite the vaccinations."@en1
