"Female genital mutilation constitutes an irreparable abuse that intentionally alters or causes injury to female genitals for non-medical reasons, with irreversible consequences which affect 140 million women and girls alive today. Moreover it cannot be considered part of any religion. An estimated 180 000 girls are at risk in Europe. Given the seriousness of the issue I support the call for the United Nations General Assembly to adopt a resolution at its 67th session with a view to ending female genital mutilation worldwide, as requested by the African Union Summit of 2 July 2011, by harmonising the action taken by its member states and strengthening regional and international legal instruments and national legislation."@en1
