"I voted firmly and with conviction in favour of the European Parliament resolution on ending female genital mutilation. Fighting this inhumane practice – which cannot be hidden behind religious justification – means not only opposing a degrading treatment which today affects 140 million women, but also fighting against the severe discrimination that women continue to suffer. The Commission needs to acknowledge the problem in order to allocate financial resources to counter it and to implement a specific programme for third countries. In this way, Member States can take combined action against the continued violence carried out against millions of women."@en1
