"I voted in favour of the resolution on the situation in Tibet. I am a co-author of the motion for a resolution by the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats), and I am pleased that we have been able to agree on a joint text. It is a pity that the socialists do not wish to acknowledge the need to support the Tibetans. The Tibetans need our constant support. We must not lose hope or faith that their peaceful struggle will ultimately lead to an improvement of the situation. I am reminded of the African proverb, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ Undoubtedly, it would be preferable if the tragic situation of the Tibetans could be changed quickly. Yet at the same time, the changes should be far-reaching. I am convinced that if the EU Member States showed more commitment to the Tibetan issue than they have done to date, the results would be more satisfactory. We have to believe that this is possible. No government, no political or social system is permanent or eternal. China too can and should change. We want to help them do so."@en1
