"The preservation of fisheries resources is a matter of concern for the European institutions, since they are aware of the role these resources play in maintaining biodiversity and their contribution to human nutrition. In 2008 the Council reached an agreement on a Regulation establishing the conditions for fishing certain stocks, including herring stocks. This report, drafted by Mr Stevenson, concerns the proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Council Regulation (EC) No 1300/2008 of 18 December 2008 establishing a multiannual plan for the stock of herring distributed to the west of Scotland and the fisheries exploiting that stock. I agree with the rapporteur’s view on streamlining procedures, pursuant to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, and provided that the Commission inform the Council and Parliament of the measures taken within the agreed time limits. I voted for this report, as it is vital to have multiannual plans for the recovery and management of fisheries resources. These plans should be based on scientific data and should be linked to viable economic conditions in fishing communities."@en1
