"Mr President, I tried to vote for this report, but my machine would not work. One essential aspect of the report is the issue of consumer information.
Something else that is important is the target group in the report, those growing children who are very vulnerable consumers, on account of their age. Obesity in children is endemic and a serious cause for concern throughout Europe. Studies have incontestably shown that advertising and the content of advertising targeted at children shape their consumer behaviour.
It is gratifying that the report calls for truthfulness when it comes to food labelling and proposes that consumers should only be given scientific and factual information. I am in favour of these views, because we all know that the role of company advertising is primarily to promote sales, and not to provide consumers with information. Amid fierce competition, many companies will stop at nothing to boost profits. Most foods marketed to children also contain a good deal of fat, sugar and salt."@en1
