"Mr President, first of all, I would like to thank the rapporteur for her work on drafting the report. As far as the new regulation is concerned, it should be noted that the previous provisions left much to be desired in practice. Despite the fact that they were adopted in order to enable the free movement of this type of goods, they have led to disruptions in trade on the EU’s internal market owing to the ambiguous and often unclear regulations. We should therefore now support the amendments which aim to eliminate excessive administrative burdens and prevent restrictions on competitiveness, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises which dominate this specialised sector of the food industry. Market issues aside, however, food safety is of paramount importance. It is especially significant when it concerns population groups as sensitive as children. I would also like to voice my agreement with the opinion of the European Economic and Social Committee, which has stated that the Member States should be allowed to apply national regulations wherever justified in the interest of public health protection. Such a solution would not jeopardise the concept of identical treatment of similar products across the entire European Union."@en1
