"It should be stated, first of all, that all the parties to the trade agreement between the EU and Colombia and Peru have clearly committed to promoting human rights, democratic principles and the rule of law, which I fully support. This agreement aims to open up the markets for
goods, services, government procurement and investment, and to promote economic integration between the parties and comprehensive economic development with the objectives of reducing poverty, creating new employment opportunities, improving working conditions and raising living standards by liberalising and expanding trade and investment between their territories. However, there is still substantial work to be done both in Colombia and Peru, especially regarding the effective implementation of the new legislative framework, which is intended to solve old problems that have not been completely resolved, relating to longstanding problems of poverty, violence and corruption, internal armed conflict, illegal armed groups, drug trafficking, impunity and land dispossession. That said, this agreement could be a key instrument in combating these types of situation, which are devastating that part of South America."@en1
