"Even though the Election Observation Mission led by Ms Nedelcheva welcomed, at the time, the holding of a referendum in South Sudan (which enabled this region of Africa to win its independence), it should be mentioned that the current situation is very different today. It could be said that the independence process, which initially ran democratically and peacefully, has since seized up: after the referendum, there has been heightened tension and a resurgence of violence between the two States. The situation between the two countries, particularly in relation to humanitarian concerns and the transit of oil extracted in South Sudan, is still a concern. We must condemn this situation, and urge Sudan and South Sudan to cease fighting, to come to an economic agreement, in particular, on the use of the oil, and to authorise humanitarian access to the populations suffering from the conflict. The two States must protect human rights in their respective territories. I fully support the idea that the solution to this conflict must be a peaceful one, and I endorse the points contained in this resolution, which I supported."@en1
