"I welcome the fact that trade negotiations have been started with Japan, one of the world’s biggest economies. Japan is in an exceptional economic situation: public debt is almost twice as high as GDP, but this is almost exclusively internal debt. In the past, Japan has reached a high level of economic development. Currently, Japan is a region of moderate growth, but has very well-developed tools for protecting access to its internal market. A good feature of this agreement is that the EU wants the principle of reciprocity and has specified strategically important areas of cooperation. This is a case in which we have given a precise definition of our objectives and of areas for trade cooperation and the tools to be used, and have taken great care over upholding the Union’s interests. These are important reasons for voting in favour, with the expectation that this matter will come back to Parliament again in September."@en1
