"This motion for a resolution, tabled following a Commission statement, concerns EU-Japan negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA). The excellent relations between the EU and Japan are very important for both parties. Indeed, at EUR 49 billion, Japan is the EU’s sixth largest trading partner, while the EU, at EUR 69 billion, is Japan’s third largest trading partner. Considering the EU’s balance of trade deficit, it is essential that Japan lift many of the obstacles it imposes on European imports, particularly non-tariff barriers, the failure to open up public procurement to EU companies that harms our small and medium-sized enterprises, and protectionism towards the Japanese automotive industry. If there is no progress on negotiations, or if the results are not satisfactory, they should be broken off. I voted to establish a new FTA, but it is crucial that the final result be beneficial to both parties and not favour just one; that is, Japan."@en1
