"The objective of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is ‘to foster the transition towards open market-oriented economies and to promote private and entrepreneurial initiative in the Central and Eastern European countries which are committed to and applying the principles of multi-party democracy, pluralism and market economics’. I am voting for this report, since I believe the EBRD should start operating in the countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, in the same way as it currently does in Central and Eastern European countries. The intention is to support the efforts of more countries in their transition to open and market-oriented economies, and to promote private enterprise and entrepreneurship. I think expanding the EBRD’s regional activities symbolises European Union support for countries’ transition to a more democratic and pluralistic economy. However, we believe that, prior to any intervention, the EBRD should carry out a detailed technical evaluation of the extant economic and political conditions in the country in question, so as to maximise the financial aid it will make available."@en1
