"The subject of energy security is vitally important in the policies of the European Union. The EU spends over EUR 400 billion on energy imports every year, and so its dependence on third countries is self-evident. Coordinating the Member States; diversifying energy suppliers, routes and sources; extending Europe’s sphere of influence beyond its borders; sharing information on energy data and projects in third countries; and developing partnerships with suppliers and international organisations are the key points on which the new European energy policy should be based. If we put these guidelines into practice alongside everything the European Union is doing in terms of energy efficiency and developing new forms of energy, we will be in a position to achieve a secure, sustainable and competitive energy policy. Much remains to be done before we have a proper common energy policy, but there is no doubt that Parliament intends to move firmly in that direction."@en1
