"As we saw when the recent earthquakes struck northern Italy, the work done by people engaged in voluntary activities makes a fundamental and unique contribution. There is a European dimension to the voluntary sector. There are, in fact, approximately 100 million European citizens participating in various voluntary activities. It is important that the EU does its part to encourage and strengthen cross-border volunteering, which is an important instrument for improving social cohesion, enhancing integration and solidarity and building a European identity. In particular, Parliament is calling for bureaucratic obstacles to be removed and for the professional skills that volunteers gain during their voluntary activities to be recognised."@en1
