"I voted for the report on the proposal for a decision of the European Parliament and of the Council on the mobilisation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) for the application submitted by Spain (Comunidad Valenciana). Spain has requested assistance for 876 redundancies in 146 enterprises involved in the manufacture of leather goods and footwear. The footwear sector represents 26% of the total employment in the Comunidad Valenciana region and is therefore an important contributor to the local economy, which is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises in traditional sectors like textiles, footwear and ceramics. I should point out that the implementation of this application addressing mass redundancies in a large number of SMEs in one sector ought to provide an example in terms of the eligibility of the self-employed and owners of SMEs for EGF support in the future regulation. I should mention again the institutions’ commitment to ensure a rapid, smooth procedure for adopting decisions on the mobilisation of the EGF, thereby offering support to workers who have been made redundant as a result of globalisation and the financial and economic crisis."@en1
