"The scope of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) was broadened for applications submitted from 1 May 2009 to include support to workers made redundant as a direct result of the global financial and economic crisis. In this regard, Spain has been experiencing a deep crisis in the footwear industry due to the impact of the imbalance between imports and exports. This imbalance was bigger than in the EU as a whole, thus creating a huge wave of redundancies following the general trend in the footwear industry in the EU towards relocation to non-EU countries of most of the manufacturing sub-processes. Employment in this specific sector has contracted by 31.80% and 188 enterprises have stopped their activity.
With this vote in favour, I am backing the application to the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund to support the reintegration into the labour market of workers made redundant as a result of the global financial and economic crisis, also aimed at ensuring a rapid procedure with due respect to the interinstitutional agreement between Parliament, the Council and the Commission for the adoption of decisions on the mobilisation of the fund."@en1
