"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I supported the report by Ms Herczog, who correctly detects the need for a coherent approach to improve regulatory convergence with neighbouring countries. The fact that Europe is a major purchaser of energy on global markets can, in fact, be seen as a weakness. On the other hand, the fact that we are also the biggest importer could be one of our strengths, if only the EU countries were to take a common negotiating position with third countries. I therefore support the approach proposed by our colleague, in particular, with regard to the three objectives underlying the whole strategy; namely, improvement and coordination at EU level, especially in strategic sectors such as research and innovation, the need for increased diversification of energy sources and, finally, the development of sustainable common policies on a global scale."@en1
