There are some 100 million citizens working in this area which, among other things, contributes to European GDP to the tune of 5%. Volunteering is not just an outstanding opportunity for personal development and training and for strengthening civic values and morals, but also leads to the promotion of European policies and the creation of social capital. Young people, especially, should be more involved in volunteering, because this means increasing the training they receive, and thereby opening up a future of job opportunities. I would therefore really like to congratulate the rapporteur, Mr Scurria, for his truly splendid work."@en1
