"Mr President, we all have to be careful when we talk about a region, because in the same way that I am often critical of those who always want a one-size-fits-all solution for Europe, we should be careful of a one-size-fits-all approach for Latin America. We must recognise that there are countries with varying levels of economic development. If you compare the range from Brazil all the way through to Bolivia, you can see the range of development, and Brazil is clearly a power house.
The second thing, which is important for me as a Member of the European Parliament for London, is that we are host to a very large Latin-American community in London and we should be taking advantage of those diaspora communities to encourage more trade links with their home countries. But we should also make sure that we encourage development based on trade issues and investment, and get away from this ideology that we sometimes see here that if a service is not provided by the state, then it should not be provided at all.
We should be encouraging investment in as many services possible – including in education, health and water – to make sure that people are taken out of poverty and live a better life."@en1
