"Mr President, I would like to congratulate Ms Ferreira and Mr Gauzès for their work. There is agreement within the Chamber that the Member States must significantly reduce their deficit and debt. In this context, I urge the Commission to be more vigilant so as to ensure that the benchmarks are respected and are not marginalised by some innovative public expenses instrument.
At the same time, we have seen that all austerity programmes implemented by any Member State in the past two years, be it rich or poor, has thrown these countries into recession. Even the average citizen is pointing fingers at us and asking us why this is being done. We cannot put off tackling our biggest economic problem any longer. It is costing billions of euro in revenue losses, aside from the fact that unemployment, especially among the younger generation, is morally wrong.
My national party has proposed a guarantee that will grant every young person the right to be in school, training or work. Measures such as these, as well as business incentives that employ young people, are desired. This is why it is vital that European leaders also draw up an economic growth and employment pact along with the fiscal pact. This can be presented to the Council summit later on this month."@en1
