"− I have been very encouraged by the generally very tolerant attitude that people in the United Kingdom and other countries now have towards homosexuality and am strongly supportive of the opportunity that homosexual couples now have for legally recognised same sex partnerships. However, I share the concern of many that the institution of marriage, which is the firm foundation on which society is built, has been undermined, and I believe that ‘gay marriage’ is a step too far. In any case I do not believe that the European Union should seek to intervene in the internal social affairs of member countries.
I therefore abstained in the final vote on this resolution."@en1
