"The current economic difficulties are putting an enormous strain on the EU’s limited resources, which is consequently stifling our ability to grow. However, I do not believe that a move towards environmental taxes, particularly an EU tax, is the answer as suggested in the report on a resource-efficient Europe. Similarly, the proposal to strengthen the EU’s waste
is not logical as this will merely put more unnecessary pressure on national governments, causing them to shift their focus away from the growth that the EU needs right now. We ought to have a greater focus on research, development and innovation if we are to be true competitors against the rising economic powers of Brazil, Russia, India and China. We need to compete by encouraging our SMEs and removing the obstacles they face, such as accessing credit, and helping them to increase their trade both in Europe and globally. We need to recognise that if we are to achieve the goals of the EU 2020 strategy of a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy, we need to take a global perspective when formulating all policy."@en1
