"Mr President, industrialised societies are based on the consumption of enormous amounts of energy and mineral resources, which are increasingly scarce. Today, there are strategies for many of these resources, whereby their management should be guided by an overriding wish to safeguard the public interest, taking into account the needs of present and future populations. There is indeed an urgent need to reduce consumption, reuse products, recycle and ensure that resources are used efficiently, but processes for doing so cannot be left at the mercy of the markets and their expectations of profitability, as some seem to think. The sustainable and efficient use of resources requires a fundamental change in the current models of production and consumption. For example, we should call into question free trade and the unsustainable flow of energy and materials with which it is associated. There needs to be a focus on local production and consumption, with short supply chains and public transport. It is not worth trying to paint a system green when it has already been shown to be unsustainable."@en1
