"Mr President, in order to overcome the current economic crisis, we need to look for new resources that we can use to guarantee development and progress. We need an ambitious agenda for future growth, providing a higher quality of life. However, the task of stimulating economic performance needs to be based on using resources sensibly and efficiently as they are not limitless. We already know that mineral resources are non-renewable, not to mention that water, soil or air are not infinite either.
We are already consuming globally more resources than the Earth can produce, with the industrialised countries, including European states, having the highest per capita consumption rate of resources. In this context, I should stress the importance not only of recycling and reuse, but also of information campaigns to change people’s behaviour."@en1
