"Mr President, our economy is in constant crisis, and natural resources are shrinking, which is why the European Union now faces the challenge of providing access to critical resources and their continuous supply. It is time to rethink our habits, because a more sensible use of resources not only helps to protect the environment, but also helps to save money and to reduce costs in industry. The idea is to do more with less. It is impossible to continue to use our current resource management model. As a result of these changes, increasing the efficiency of resource use is a key issue for ensuring economic growth and more jobs in Europe. It will create broad economic opportunities as well as improving productivity, reducing costs and contributing to competitiveness. I am pleased that the report focuses on stimulating the development of technological innovation, boosting employment in the quickly developing green energy sector, and supporting trade in the European Union. However, I believe that an ambitious plan is not sufficient, and I welcome and support Mr Gerbrandy’s opinion that bureaucracy should be reduced. I believe that no new legislation should be created, but instead that the existing legislation should be used effectively. It is equally important to set goals which are realistic for all Member States. Standards which are too high and which would be impossible for certain Member States to fulfil would mean the strategy no longer had the advantage of being feasible, which would be to the detriment of its guiding purpose. Our future depends on how we use resources now, and we thus need a balanced and well-conceived strategy."@en1
