"Mr President, the hard work has been done, because we could liken the situation of resources in Europe to someone who has developed a chronic disease. This individual has to change his or her way of life completely. Some are able to do so and they even reach an above-average age, while others surrender to the dictates of pleasure and give in to the disease, which quickly takes its toll in the form of decreased well-being and a shorter lifespan. It is hard, and yet essential, to understand that we need to create more in times of crisis, that we need to increase growth while at the same time expending fewer resources. Sustainable economic growth will be more possible in real terms in times of crisis than at a time of plenty. History teaches us that times of plenty actually inhibit creativity. It is important to assess the measurable and understandable effects that every European, man or woman, can achieve by changing their lifestyles. This is also the biggest opportunity for us, politicians, to engage the whole of society, and it throws the doors wide open for researchers and innovators. Europe is a prime location for a hub of research activity because of its companies, knowledge, well-developed markets and, in particular, its ability to cope with complexity. Integration, innovation and rational use of resources will reduce our dependence and create new jobs."@en1
