"Mr President, Commissioner, the huge number of speakers in today’s debate illustrates that Parliament really does support your initiative and truly wishes us to proceed in this direction. It is, moreover, logical, given that European citizens consume, on average, sixteen tonnes of goods, of which six tonnes end up in the rubbish bin. The cost is enormous.
I know that many colleagues react to these ideas, but I do not know why. We are faced with the problem of a huge economic crisis which we cannot resolve simply – if at all – by reducing low wages and pensions. We must stop importing products and goods that end up in the rubbish bin. Therefore, Commissioner, please continue with your initiative even more pro-actively, with binding targets."@en1
