"Mr President, resource efficiency is essentially about becoming better at doing more with less. It also opens up opportunities for new jobs and new growth, in other words, long-term sustainable growth which is climate-friendly and environmentally sound and which, for this very reason, is in the process of becoming an important competitive factor. This report deals primarily with investments in innovation and research. For example, the report states that subsidies for businesses which harm the environment must come to an end. This is a very good proposal and it does not come a day too soon. It forms a sound basis for a change in course, new investments and new jobs. The work on the European Parliament’s raw materials strategy also made it clear that resource efficiency has a direct link to security of supply. European industry is dependent on metals, minerals and other raw materials. Developing ideas such as urban mining also involves establishing new industries. Most importantly, however, we are helping existing industries to access the raw materials they need. This is all about making careful use of resources. We need to use the assets that we have in an intelligent way. Therefore, this report makes an important contribution to the ongoing discussion and to future action. At the same time, it is clear that we need a more in-depth debate on the consequences of the tax shift or, in other words, the redistribution of tax from work to the environment."@en1
