"Mr President, I would like to thank the rapporteur for his work. I feel obliged to highlight several new provisions which have compelled me to propose certain necessary amendments. We all agree on the need to use our resources sparingly and rationally. However, all measures must be focused on strengthening Europe’s industry and its economic growth. The development of green public procurement is necessary and requires further work, but in times of crisis, it cannot involve additional administrative costs. It is acceptable to introduce a legal ban on landfills, but there must be an indication of the maximum recyclable share of waste which may be used as raw materials.
It is bad timing to introduce additional financial burdens in the form of an environmental tax during a crisis. Accordingly, we should postpone its introduction until better times. The proposal to reduce animal protein intake and the resulting transformation of our agriculture into a fruit and vegetable paradise gives rise to similar concerns. The introduction of new legal provisions must also be based on the technical and technological solutions available, and the proposal to bring residual waste close to zero is, in my view, an idealistic approach which does not translate into real life.
Finally, I would like to add a few words about the call for environmental information relating to mass consumer goods. I say yes to consumer information, but information which is clear and necessary, and does not create chaos. In my view, the report contains a range of very important observations, but it fails to cover a number of important issues relating to the current crisis in Europe. We must wait and see how work progresses and what possibilities there will be for creating new working conditions for current generations."@en1
