"Mr President, a conflict between Sudan and South Sudan would affect not only regional stability but also the global economy. The EU must continue to be involved, as specified by the UN-approved road map, in the efforts to defuse the situation. Further measures are also required to provide assistance to the population. Hundreds of thousands of people are already suffering the consequences of the crisis between the two countries. For instance, the number of refugees has doubled at the Yida camp in the last two months. I should mention, in particular, the situation in the Nuba mountain region where the Sudanese regime does not allow any access, even for delivering humanitarian aid. UN agencies are warning that the area is on the brink of disaster due to the shortage of food and doses of children’s vaccines. I must stress the need to negotiate a humanitarian corridor for providing assistance to the population."@en1
