"Mr President, what we are observing today is how a long-term internal conflict has expanded into a full-blown international conflict that is about to explode. But I am encouraged by the active role played by the EU’s leaders and its External Action Service in putting pressure on both governments to stick to the 2 May 2012 road map and come to a peaceful settlement.
What the EU should do is address much more actively Chinese activity in the region, because it is not a great stabilising influence. It is good news that the Security Council has recently extended its mission in the region by six months.
What we need today is for the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism – which should deploy international observers to monitor developments on the ground – to be up and running. We also need to address the humanitarian situation: almost 400 000 South Sudanese have managed to return to Sudan after independence, thanks to the help of the many frontline partners. We now need to ensure that their basic needs for food, water and medication will be provided for. The EU should provide more meaningful support to the efforts provided by the UN and humanitarian organisations."@en1
