"The Treaty of Lisbon granted Parliament greater powers. In the wake of this extension of its powers, Parliament now has the opportunity to adopt a regulation that seeks to establish the proceedings of committees of inquiry, strengthening their potential scope for action and the means at their disposal to carry out their tasks in a dignified, rigorous and effective way, as already happens in other parliaments. This type of committee must always be mindful of the respondents’ right of appeal. On this subject, I recall some rather unedifying incidents which have occurred in the hearings of candidates for the position of Commissioner, in which they were subjected to inappropriate behaviour by certain Members, who put the statements made to abusive use. I therefore hope the desired extension of the scope of these committees will go hand in hand with the responsible use of this instrument, which we hope will be fair and useful."@en1
