"I welcome Parliament’s adoption of this recommendation. The EU is the foremost destination for Chinese imports, which increased 39.5% between 2009 and 2010, making China the EU’s second largest trading partner. The increasing development of China’s economy and its accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) bring with them greater responsibility to play a full and positive role in the global economy. China joined the WTO in 2001 and should respect this organisation’s rules by liberalising trade and opening up its markets. However, it has not yet made adequate efforts in this direction. China does not fulfil the criteria of a market economy as defined by the WTO. The Commission should apply the principle of reciprocity to the EU common commercial policy with developing and emerging countries, of which China is one, in order to restore fair competition. EU-China relations will flourish on the basis of partnership and mutual benefit, not stiff competition."@en1
