"I abstained in the vote on this text because China is the most important challenge for EU trade policy and I believe that the commercial relations with this country should be evaluated from a much larger perspective. We must consider that China is not only the world’s second largest economy and the biggest exporter in the global economy, but also an increasingly important political power. In addition, China has, in recent decades, achieved important social progress and such an improvement in the quality of life for a huge country in such a short period of time is unique in history. In fact, the economic growth in China has lifted half a billion people out of poverty since 1990. I agree on many points stressed by this report but, at the same time, there is a lack of strategic consideration. By the middle of the century, China will become the world’s most powerful economy and for this reason, we need to build a partnership based on mutual respect. In addition, it is important to consider the potential benefits for developing countries from deeper economic relations with China and that the growth in trade between all the EU Member States and China represents a crucial opportunity for growth."@en1
