"We are all aware that the current economic and financial crisis, which is taking a long time to disappear, had its origins in the financial sector. This was an unregulated sector that bankrupted thousands of businesses and put millions of people out of work. Given that the crisis was started by the financial economy, it is only fair that this sector should pay for a part of the crisis, rather than leaving that to the public, as is the case at present. This report by Ms Podimata focuses on the proposal for a Council directive on a common system of financial transaction tax (FTT) and amending Directive 2008/7/EC. I voted for this proposal because it improves transparency and relieves the burden on the public by requiring a fair contribution from the financial sector. I hope that the FTT will be adopted at the next EU Council of finance ministers in July."@en1
