"Regulation of this specific category of oil tanker at European level comes in the wake of major natural disasters caused by oil slicks from wrecked tankers, such as the
in 2002. In order to learn lessons from the mistakes of the past, this regulation seeks to mitigate the risk of oil pollution of European waters by introducing double hulls. In short, the EU proposes that cargo tanks should have a second inner plate, at a sufficient distance from the outer shell. This design should protect cargo tanks from damage and thus reduce the pollution risk. Clearly, this regulation is important to Greece, a country surrounded by a sea used by a large number of tankers every year. That is why I voted in favour of the report."@en1
