Bluefin tuna have long been under threat from overfishing in the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean. As the main fishery, the EU ought at least to adhere to the strict rules that already exist so that stocks can recover, but apparently it is not doing so – there are still plenty of loopholes. Accordingly, the report falls short of all the scientific recommendations for the recovery of the stocks; it seems to me that we need stricter control of the fishing fleets and the associated industry. As far as I am concerned, the report contains nothing but a poor compromise that I cannot vote for, which is why I abstained from voting."@en1
