"Mr President, I voted for this report because I think it provides a fair analysis of relations between China and the European Union, as well as a fair analysis of the European Union’s situation in relation to China. This is because, if there is one thing we must admit, it is that the European Union has a certain paradoxical type of dependency on China, by which I mean the public debt situation. I believe that the European Union is obliged, as a matter of urgency, to assess how much of Europe’s public debt is held by China and initiate new negotiations with China because relations are governed by an old agreement dating from 1985.
I think that the solution is a strategic partnership with China. At the same time, this report allows us to ask a further two questions: why have we ourselves failed in Africa and Latin America, while China is starting to have success, and what solutions are available so that we can try to restore this imbalance in the European Union’s favour because we need to acknowledge that an emerging power and traditional power cannot be reconciled at the moment?"@en1
