"Mr President, I support the text tabled by Ms de Sarnez since it highlights, extremely clearly, the trade imbalance between the European Union and China, and sets out concerns that I share, especially during this time of international crisis.
The relocation of many companies, aided by the lack of rules on workers’ rights and the environment, has led to many job losses in Europe to the detriment of our citizens. The social costs of the EU-China imbalance are rising all the time. Furthermore, while a terrible recession is affecting European countries, the Chinese economy, on the other hand, is expected to grow by 9% annually.
First of all, the European Commission needs to commit itself to securing a level of reciprocity from the Chinese in highly delicate areas such as public procurement, provision of services and the protection of workers. The European Union should be stricter with third countries which are penalising European businesses through unfair competition."@en1
