"Mr President, I appreciate the opportunity to reply to some of the remarks that have been made. I think it is quite important for the regulation to be legally watertight. For instance, it is crucial to avoid the possibility of the authority of the committee being challenged in the middle of the inquiry. For this reason, we need to work together to make sure that all the provisions are legally justified and completely valid. I believe that it is in all our interests. Ms Jäätteenmäki and several other speakers referred to the issue of the disclosure of confidential information. I believe that this is one topic on which we need to work further to find a good solution for all three institutions. I also very much appreciate Mr Häfner’s comment. He clearly highlighted the importance of having clear rules with regard to such sensitive areas as committees of inquiry. I would very much like to reiterate the point made by Mr Duff, who highlighted the importance of overcoming the issue of unequal treatment between national and European civil servants. I hope that with a good cooperative approach to this issue, we will find a solution that is acceptable to all three institutions."@en1
